Academic ApproachFundamentally, we believe all children will learn at high levels if we engage them ambitious intellectual work, provide them with comprehensive academic and social supports, and immerse them in a culture of achievement. Families who seek a college preparatory education for their children and students who take responsibility for making their best efforts to learn and achieve will thrive at the University of Chicago Charter School. The University of Chicago Charter School uses a research-based approach to instruction, emphasizing literacy and mathematics at all grade levels. We administer formative assessments throughout the school year to gauge student progress towards meeting learning standards, using the data to fine-tune instruction and target academic and social supports for our students. An advanced technological infrastructure supports teaching and learning. Beginning grade six, the student-to-laptop ratio is 1:1. We have a longer school day and a longer school year than the Chicago Public Schools. Our extended day and summer school programs offer students: 1) opportunities to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the core academic subjects of reading and mathematics, 2) options to develop their interests in leadership, the arts, sports, digital media, and science, 3) homework help, 4) tutoring; and 5) mentoring. At the secondary level, our students undertake “signature projects” and "senior thesis projects". These projects are long-term research studies done by students in the humanities, sciences, and social sciences. The students present their findings and recommendations to peers, parents and experts in the field. Above all, our teachers and campus directors are committed, knowledgeable, and skillful instructional leaders who teach, guide, and inspire our students to excel. |
